1820 Large 0

The 1820 Large 0 quarter is the most prominent of three sub-varieties created when Philadelphia Mint engravers used three different sizes of the digit 0 to punch the final two zeros of the date. The combined 1820 mintage was 127,444 quarters, an even smaller delivery than 1819, and the Mint continued to allocate the bulk of its silver coinage to half dollars during the period. The Large 0 issue draws particular interest because the size disparity between its zeros and the preceding 12 is visually obvious, even on circulated examples. For a year that produced fewer than 130,000 quarters in total, the existence of three documented zero punches says a great deal about how individually each die was prepared.

Standard Type 1 specifications apply: 27 millimeters, 6.74 grams, 89.24 percent silver with a reeded edge. The Large 0 diagnostic is comparative. Place the coin under good light, study the two zero digits in the date, and compare their height to the 1 and 2 immediately to their left. On a Large 0 piece, the zeros stand essentially as tall as the 2, with broad open centers and thick exterior walls. The lower curve of the zero comes close to the denticle line. Browning attributions for the Large 0 group help variety specialists confirm the strike through reverse die markers such as denticle alignment and the orientation of the eagle's arrow shafts. Authentication relies on accurate weight, the persistence of curl detail under Liberty's cap, and the absence of tooling around the date.

PCGS and NGC certify the three zero-size varieties separately, and population data shows the Large 0 holding the strongest survival rate of the three.
