About this coinHistory

The 1827 1827/3 Original proof Capped Bust Quarter occupies a place of honor among American numismatic icons. No circulation quarters were struck in 1827; the Philadelphia Mint produced no business strikes for the denomination that year, so every legitimate 1827-dated quarter began life as a proof. Mint workers repunched a 1823-dated obverse die with the new 1827 date, leaving traces of the underlying "3" beneath the final digit of the date. The number of original strikings was minuscule, likely fewer than fifteen pieces struck for presentation purposes and for distribution to Mint friends and early collectors. Because no business strikes exist, the 1827 Original ranks alongside the 1804 dollar as a proof-only United States issue of enormous historical and numismatic stature.

The key diagnostic separating the 1827 Original from the later 1827 Restrike is the shape of the "2" in the reverse denomination "25 C." (not in the obverse date). Originals show a CURL-BASE 2, where the lower stroke of the digit curves back on itself to form a closed flag at the base. Restrikes use a FLAT-BASE 2, a straight horizontal foot. Both varieties carry the 1827/3 overdate on the obverse, so the underdigit "3" peeking below the "7" with 10x magnification is present on Originals and Restrikes alike. Type 1 specifications apply: 27 millimeters, 6.74 grams, 89.24 percent silver and 10.76 percent copper, reeded edge. Proof authentication requires deeply mirrored fields, sharp drapery folds, six-point stars, and squared rims. John Dannreuther lists the Original as JD-1 in his "Encyclopedia of United States Proof Coinage 1722-1989," with Sheldon rarity estimated at R-7, meaning roughly eight to twelve known examples.

Combined Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) populations show fewer than fifteen graded examples between them. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers have handled major sales, with six-figure and seven-figure results when high-grade examples surface. For more, see the Capped Bust Quarter series history.
