The 1824/2 overdate proof Capped Bust Quarter is one of the rarest proof issues of the entire Type 1 series. Capped Bust quarter production paused for parts of the 1820s as the Philadelphia Mint, the only United States Mint operating during this period, prioritized other denominations and reused viable dies whenever possible. Mint workers repunched a leftover 1822-dated die with the new 1824 date, creating the overdate variety. From this die a tiny number of proof strikings emerged, almost certainly fewer than five pieces. These coins were never advertised or sold publicly during the year of issue; they reached early collectors through informal Mint channels and presentation contexts that have largely been lost to history.
Type 1 Capped Bust quarter specifications hold steady: 27 millimeters in diameter, 6.74 grams in weight, 89.24 percent silver alloyed with 10.76 percent copper, and a reeded edge. Identifying the overdate requires close examination of the final digit of the date with 10x magnification. The underlying "2" shows as a small bump protruding from the lower-left curve of the "4," with additional traces visible inside the loop area. Proof authentication adds layered requirements: look for mirror-bright fields with one-directional die-polish lines, fully realized stars showing six sharp points each, completely struck eagle wing feathers, and squared knife-rims. John Dannreuther's "Encyclopedia of United States Proof Coinage 1722-1989" catalogs this issue as JD-1. The Sheldon rarity estimate is R-8, which means only one to three coins are believed to exist.
Combined Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) population reports show only one or two graded examples in total. Auction appearances are extraordinarily rare, with Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers documenting the few public sales. When an attributed example surfaces, advanced cabinet collectors typically pursue it aggressively, pushing realized prices into the six-figure range.
