The 1838 Capped Bust quarter closes a design era that began with John Reich's original 1815 portrait and ended with William Kneass's reduced-size adaptation. Philadelphia struck 366,000 pieces in this final year before Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Seated design replaced the Capped Bust format later in 1838. Those Liberty Seated quarters dated 1838 belong to an entirely separate series and should not be confused with the Capped Bust pieces. The transition reflected broader artistic ambitions at the mint under Director Robert M. Patterson, who collaborated with Thomas Sully and Gobrecht to bring a more neoclassical aesthetic to American silver coinage. The 1838 Capped Bust production therefore represents the last echo of an older design tradition stretching back nearly a quarter century.
A single die pair, cataloged as Browning B-1, is documented for 1838 Capped Bust quarters. The die pair joined a new obverse with a reverse previously used on 1837 quarters, which means some coins counted in the 1838 delivery total may have actually been struck from 1837-dated dies that ran past the calendar year. All 1838 Capped Bust quarters were struck under the post-1837 Act standards: 90% silver, 6.68 grams, with the same 24.3 mm diameter and reeded edge that had defined the reduced-size format since 1831. Authentication should verify the post-1837 weight standard of 6.68 grams within tolerance, examine edge reeding, and confirm die polish patterns under 10x magnification. Strike quality on 1838 Capped Bust quarters tends to be good, with most surviving examples showing well-defined Liberty and crisp eagle details. The mint's experience with the steam-press format by this point produced reliable execution.
PCGS and NGC populations for 1838 Capped Bust are moderate, reflecting both the mintage and the appeal as a final-year type coin. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers have offered numerous mint-state examples from advanced collections, with MS64 and higher pieces commanding meaningful premiums. For the full arc of the design, see the Capped Bust Quarter series history.
