About this coinHistory

The 1834 proof quarter dollar was struck during a busy year at the Philadelphia Mint, with steam-powered coinage producing far higher mintages of circulating quarters than in years past. Proof production, however, remained tiny and bespoke. Director Samuel Moore had stepped down the previous year, and his successor Dr. Robert Maskell Patterson was in the early months of a long tenure that would professionalize Mint operations and develop closer relationships with the small but growing community of American numismatists. A proof coin of this era was not advertised, not sold over the counter, and not produced in batches. Each example was prepared as a courtesy: a presentation piece for a senator, a cabinet collector, or a member of the annual assay commission, which examined Mint output for compliance.

Cataloged JD-1 in John Dannreuther's "Encyclopedia of United States Proof Coinage 1722-1989," the 1834 proof shows the matured Type 2 design with strong execution. Specifications: 24.3 mm diameter, 6.74 grams gross weight, 89.24% silver alloy. Two authentication diagnostics are critical. Look for fully formed, deeply mirrored fields that show no trace of the radial flow lines visible on business strikes, and confirm full hair detail on Liberty's curls beneath the cap, since circulation 1834 quarters often show slight softness in this area. Edge inspection should reveal a perfectly squared reeded edge, free of the slight chamfer typical of higher-speed business striking. Sheldon rarity is R-6, which on the standard scale equates to roughly thirteen to thirty surviving examples.

Certified survivors at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) together number in the low double digits, with Proof-64 and Proof-65 most often encountered. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers handle almost every market appearance, and prices range from the mid five figures into six figures for finer pieces. Additional context on Type 2 production sits in the Capped Bust Quarter series history.
