The 1838 proof quarter dollar marks the final chapter of the Capped Bust design at the Philadelphia Mint. Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Seated motif, already introduced on the silver dollar in 1836 and on the half dime and dime in 1837, was extended to the quarter later in 1838. Capped Bust proof production came to an end in the early months of the year. Each 1838 proof was prepared in the traditional manner: dies basined to mirror finish, planchets carefully selected and burnished, and a slow press operated at reduced speed with multiple blows per coin. Recipients included Treasury officials, foreign dignitaries, and the handful of cabinet collectors who maintained Mint relationships, including members of the Eckfeldt family who served at the institution.
Cataloged JD-1 in John Dannreuther's "Encyclopedia of United States Proof Coinage 1722-1989," the 1838 Capped Bust proof carries the Reich-Kneass design in its final form. Specifications follow the post-1837 standard: 24.3 mm diameter, 6.68 grams gross weight, 90% silver. Two authentication diagnostics are essential. First, the obverse fields should display a deep, reflective mirror with no flow lines, since business strikes of this final year already show wear from heavy press use. Second, check Liberty's hair detail beneath the cap and the eagle's claw definition on the reverse, both of which should be fully struck up; business strikes routinely show partial detail here. Sheldon rarity is R-7, meaning roughly six to ten coins are thought to exist, making this a key target for type collectors assembling complete Capped Bust proof sets.
Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) census reports combined show only a handful of certified examples, generally graded Proof-63 through Proof-65. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers have handled the limited public sales, with results regularly reaching six figures. The transition to Liberty Seated coinage closes the Capped Bust Quarter series history.
