About this coinHistory

The 1840-O No Drapery is the first Seated Liberty Quarter struck at a branch mint and the only New Orleans issue to carry the original Gobrecht elbow treatment without drapery folds. Production ran during the opening months of 1840, before the mid-year hub change pushed the new Drapery obverse into routine use, and the run was succeeded the same year by the 1840-O Drapery from the same facility. Combined 1840-O mintage is reported at 382,200 pieces covering both subtypes, with the No Drapery accounting for the smaller share. New Orleans had begun striking silver in 1838, and quarters joined the lineup in 1840 as the branch mint's product slate expanded. The issue is the scarcer of the two 1840-O subtypes and currently classifies Semi-Key on the site.

Strike on the issue is typical of early New Orleans silver: respectable in the centers, with periodic softness at the eagle's claws, the lower shield lines, and stars near Liberty's head. The attribution diagnostic is the elbow. Examine Liberty's left elbow as the viewer sees it on the right side of the obverse for a smooth arm-to-gown transition with no cloth folds dropping downward; that is the No Drapery hub. The 1840-O Drapery subtype, which followed later in the year, shows visible fabric extending below the elbow and trades as a different and more available coin. The diagnostic remains readable down into Very Good, which is fortunate because most survivors fall in the Good through Very Fine band. Mint State examples are condition-rare; PCGS and NGC populations thin out sharply above MS61, and gem MS65 survivors are essentially absent at either grading service. Counterfeit risk is moderate at higher grades; weight should fall near 6.68 g per the Mint Act of January 18, 1837, and certification through a major service is the working standard for any purchase above Very Fine.

The Semi-Key classification tracks how the issue actually behaves in the market. Subtype demand pulls collectors who want the only branch-mint No Drapery quarter into the same supply pool as Seated specialists chasing 1840-O variations, which keeps circulated examples in problem-free Very Fine or Extremely Fine moving briskly through dealer inventories. Acquisition opportunities are episodic above About Uncirculated; original gray patina, a sharp date, and a clearly photographed elbow on both sides matter more than chasing the highest numeric grade. Attribution disputes happen, so a major-service slab with the No Drapery designation removes meaningful risk. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design, the No Drapery to Drapery transition, and the series' production arc, see the Seated Liberty Quarter series history.
