The 1841 Seated Liberty Quarter is one of the lowest-mintage Philadelphia issues of the early series, struck during a quiet year for Mother Mint quarter production. Reported delivery is 120,000 pieces, a sharp drop from the 1840 Drapery and a figure that places this issue near the bottom of the pre-Arrows Philadelphia range. The coin carries the Drapery obverse hub that had taken over from the original No Drapery treatment mid-1840, and that subtype anchors every Seated quarter from this point until the Arrows arrive in 1853. Christian Gobrecht designed the obverse, with the seated figure modeled by Robert Ball Hughes from a Thomas Sully painting; the reverse heraldic eagle remained the same as on the opening 1838 dies.
Strike on the issue is generally adequate, with the typical early-1840s Philadelphia softness patterns: high points on Liberty's head and cap can come up mushy, lower shield lines occasionally wash out, and the eagle's claws are the first detail to weaken on a tired die. Authentication concerns are modest for circulated grades and rise with grade. The drapery diagnostic at Liberty's elbow remains the standard subtype check; the date should sit at the correct height and width for 1841 logotype, and weight should fall near 6.68 g per the Mint Act of January 18, 1837 standard. Counterfeit risk is moderate at higher grades, with certification through PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, the practical baseline for any purchase above Extremely Fine. Population reports show the bulk of survivors concentrated in the Fine through Extremely Fine band, with Mint State examples thinning sharply above MS62 and gem MS65 survivors scarce at either grading service. Original-skin coins with light gray patina carry a clear premium over dipped or brightened examples.
The Regular classification reflects how circulated 1841s actually trade. The low mintage gives the issue a quiet condition-rare profile above About Uncirculated, but circulated examples in problem-free Very Fine or Extremely Fine clear without much delay because date-set builders working the 1838-1844 transition era reach for the date routinely. Acquisition opportunities at the lower grades are steady; choice AU and Mint State coins require a longer search. Original surfaces, a sharp date, and clean fields matter more than chasing the highest numeric grade. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design, the No Drapery to Drapery transition, and the series' production arc, see the Seated Liberty Quarter series history.
