About this coinHistory

The 1842-O Large Date is the more available of the two date-size varieties struck at New Orleans in 1842, paired against its scarcer Small Date counterpart in the combined reported mintage of 769,000 pieces. The two varieties share an obverse subtype but use different date logotype punches: Large Date employs the heavier, taller numerals that became standard at the branch as 1842 progressed, while Small Date uses the older, smaller punch carried over from the opening months of the year. Large Date accounts for the bulk of the combined 1842-O total and is the working slot for date-set builders and Seated quarter specialists who treat the Small Date as a separate variety entry. The coin carries the Drapery obverse hub introduced in mid-1840 and the standard heraldic-eagle reverse, with the O mintmark below the eagle.

Strike on the issue is uneven, the typical pattern for early-1840s New Orleans silver. Liberty's head and the cap above it can come up soft, the inner shield lines occasionally wash out, and the eagle's claws and lower leg feathers are usually the first detail to weaken on a tired die. The attribution diagnostic against Small Date is straightforward and reads under 5x magnification: examine the date numerals for height and weight. Large Date shows visibly taller, heavier digits with broader strokes, while Small Date carries narrower, shorter digits with thinner strokes. PCGS and NGC attribute the variety on the slab when submitted with the correct designation, and the diagnostic remains readable down into Very Good. Counterfeit risk is moderate at higher grades; weight should fall near 6.68 g per the Mint Act of January 18, 1837 standard, and certification through a major service is the working baseline above Very Fine. Survival skews to the Good through Very Fine band, with Mint State examples uncommon and PCGS and NGC populations thinning sharply above MS62.

The Regular classification matches how the variety trades in the market. Date-set builders working the 1840-1844 New Orleans run treat the Large Date as the standard 1842-O slot, and a problem-free Very Fine or Extremely Fine example clears specialist inventories without much delay. Choice AU and Mint State coins require a longer search; original gray patina, a sharp date logotype, and clean fields matter more than chasing the highest numeric grade. Specialist collectors typically pair the Large Date with the Small Date as a two-coin year, but most general date-set builders cover the slot with a single Large Date and leave the variety to specialists.
