1842-O Small Date

The 1842-O Small Date is the scarcer of two date-punch varieties struck at New Orleans in 1842 and one of the better-known logotype rarities in the early Seated Liberty Quarter series. Combined 1842-O mintage is reported at 769,000 pieces covering both Small Date and Large Date, with the Small Date accounting for only a fraction of that total. The variety reflects an early-year punch usage at New Orleans: the smaller, narrower date logotype carried over from the opening months of 1842 before the taller, heavier Large Date punch took over for the bulk of the year. Both major grading services attribute the variety on the slab, and specialist references treat the issue as a stand-alone entry rather than a sub-listing.

Authentication turns on the date logotype, which is the only feature separating the two 1842-O varieties. Examine the date numerals under 5x magnification for height, width, and stroke weight: the Small Date shows visibly shorter, narrower digits with thinner strokes, while the Large Date carries taller, heavier digits with broader strokes. The diagnostic remains readable down into Very Good, but worn coins benefit from a slabbed reference example or a clean side-by-side photograph for comparison. Counterfeit risk is moderate, both for outright fakes and for misattributed Large Date coins sold as Small Date; PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, certification with the explicit Small Date pedigree on the label is the working standard for any purchase above Very Fine. Weight should fall near 6.68 g per the Mint Act of January 18, 1837 standard. Strike runs uneven, the usual pattern for early-1840s New Orleans silver: softness occasionally at Liberty's head, lower shield lines, and the eagle's claws. Survival concentrates in the Good through Very Fine band; Mint State coins are rare, and PCGS and NGC populations top out in the low MS grades.

The Semi-Key classification reflects how the variety actually trades. Variety-set builders and Seated quarter specialists compete with date-set collectors who want the full 1842-O pair, and demand routinely runs ahead of supply at all grade levels. Circulated examples in problem-free Very Fine or Extremely Fine clear specialist inventories quickly; choice AU and Mint State coins are episodic. Original gray patina, a sharp date logotype, and a clearly photographed attribution matter more than chasing the highest numeric grade. The variety's wide recognition keeps the market well organized, and slabbed Small Date examples carry meaningful premiums over the Large Date even in mid-circulated grades.
