About this coinHistory

The 2001-P New York quarter opened the program's third year as the eleventh release overall, matching the Empire State's spot in the original order of statehood. Sculptor-engraver Alfred Maletsky worked the reverse: an outline of New York with the Statue of Liberty rising at center, a line tracing the route of the Erie Canal cutting through the state, and eleven stars arranged across the field for the eleventh state to ratify the Constitution. The legend "Gateway to Freedom" curves above. Philadelphia struck 655,400,000 pieces, comfortably the higher of the two New York mintages and a strong year-3 P-mint output that reflected continued public enthusiasm for the program at its midpoint.

Strike on the New York design generally comes up clean. The Statue of Liberty stands at moderate relief, and her torch and the radiate crown render well on early-die-state coins, though both can soften on later-state strikes. The fine line of the Erie Canal and the small stars are the natural die-fill points and the first elements to drop out under heavy use. Washington's cheek field caps obverse grading as usual; contact marks scattered across the cheek and temple drop many otherwise-strong coins out of MS67. PCGS and NGC populations are heavy at MS66 thanks to the large mintage, thinner at MS67, and genuinely scarce at MS68 in the population reports kept by the two major third-party grading services (TPGs). No FS-listed varieties have anchored to the issue, though minor die cracks across the canal line turn up on cherrypicked rolls.

Collecting demand for the 2001-P New York runs steady, set by registry-set completion and by the Statue of Liberty's strong graphic pull. The design photographs cleanly and gives the coin recognizable shelf presence next to the more landscape-heavy 2001 issues. Roll searchers continue to pull premium strikes for full-detail gems, and MS67 examples remain accessible for collectors completing a top-grade program run on a working budget.
