The 2003-D Illinois quarter carried the Land of Lincoln program design out of Denver in slightly higher numbers than its Philadelphia counterpart. Sculptor-engraver Donna Weaver's reverse pairs a young Abraham Lincoln with an outline of the state, the Chicago skyline to the right and a working farm to the left, while twenty-one stars border the field for the twenty-first state in the Union. The legend "Land of Lincoln" anchors the bottom curve and the inscription "21st State / Century" links statehood number with the incoming bicentennial period. Denver struck 237,400,000 pieces, an 11.6-million unit lift over the P-mint output and well within the standard 2003 production band.
Strike characteristics on the Denver issue mirror those of its Philadelphia partner. The young Lincoln carries his facial detail in early-die-state coins; the farm silhouette and city skyline serve as natural die-wear indicators since both lose definition early as dies age. The twenty-one rim stars should be fully formed with squared edges and a clean center punch; mushy stars usually mark late-die-state strikes. Washington's hair flow and the temple area generally hold up well, with cheek marks remaining the chief grade-limiter on the obverse. PCGS and NGC report large populations through MS66, with a steep contraction at MS67 and genuine scarcity at MS68 in the population reports kept by the two major third-party grading services (TPGs). No significant doubled-die or RPM has surfaced for the issue.
Collector interest in the 2003-D Illinois tracks standard 50-state levels. Roll-searched MS66 examples remain easy to locate, MS67 stays accessible for working budgets, and the design carries enough recognition that Lincoln-themed and Illinois cabinets place it readily. Population-report gaps tend to develop at MS68 first, where the rim stars and field cleanliness become limiting factors. For more on the broader program, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
