2026-04-14, San Francisco struck 1,175,934 Wisconsin silver proofs in 2004 for distribution through the annual Silver Proof Set. Wisconsin's reverse, designed by Alfred Maletsky, brings together three pillars of the state's agricultural identity: a dairy cow standing in the foreground, a wheel of cheese, and an ear of husked corn. The motto "Forward", Wisconsin's state motto since 1851, runs above. On a silver planchet the texture of the cow's hide, the rind detail of the cheese wheel, and the rows of corn kernels all gain a sharpness the clad strike cannot match, the bright white metal turning a workmanlike farm tableau into a polished collector object. The Extra Leaf High and Low varieties that famously emerged on the 2004-D circulation strikes do not exist on the silver proofs; the San Francisco dies were prepared with no such added foliage, and any "extra leaf" claim on a silver proof should be treated with extreme skepticism.
Authentication of a genuine 2004-S Wisconsin Silver Proof starts with weight. A silver example weighs 6.25 grams; the clad proof weighs 5.67 grams. That 0.58-gram differential is the most efficient single check the collector has, and it disposes of altered or misattributed pieces in one measurement. The 90% silver, 10% copper alloy produces a silvery-white reflective surface visibly brighter than the slightly grayer cast of copper-nickel clad, and viewing the 24.3mm edge straight on reveals a solid silver color rather than the copper-cored sandwich stripe found on clad coinage. Squared, sharp rims and heavily frosted Cameo or Deep Cameo devices floating above mirror-finish fields complete the visual signature. The cow's body, the cheese wheel, and the corn ear should all display dense, even frost under angled light.
The 2004-S Wisconsin Silver Proof never entered circulation, with distribution limited to collector packaging, and survival rates remain very high in original Mint sets and certified holders. Deep Cameo and PR70 examples draw the strongest premiums, while the silver content provides a steady bullion floor across grade levels.
