2006-P North Dakota

Philadelphia's 2006 North Dakota quarter carries Donna Weaver's reverse: two American bison grazing in the foreground with the layered ridges and buttes of Theodore Roosevelt National Park's badlands rising in the background. North Dakota ratified its statehood on November 2, 1889 as the thirty-ninth state, admitted the same day as South Dakota (the alphabetical order of signing was deliberately obscured to avoid the appearance of seniority). Philadelphia struck 305,800,000 pieces, sitting on the higher side of the 2006-P range. Weaver compressed two visual subjects (the bison pair as foreground anchor, the badlands as middle-ground frame) into a layered composition that gives the design more registration points than most state reverses and reads cleanly at coin scale.

Strikes on Philadelphia North Dakotas come up cleanly defined more often than not, with the bison's shoulder hump and beard textures and the badlands ridge lines serving as the natural detail registers.
