About this coinHistory

Denver's 2007 Washington quarter delivers Charles Vickers's "Evergreen State" composition: a king salmon mid-leap with a stylized Mount Rainier rising in the background, the inscription set along the lower margin. Vickers gave the fish the primary action line and let the mountain profile anchor the secondary plane, a layered reading that distinguishes the design from the more frontal, single-subject reverses elsewhere in the lineup. Washington ratified its statehood on November 11, 1889 as the forty-second state, admitted alongside Montana, the Dakotas, and (the following year) Idaho during the great northern-tier expansion. Denver struck 280,000,000 pieces, edging Philadelphia's 265.2 million output and marking the higher half of the year's P/D split on the Washington issue. The 280 million figure sat near the middle of the year's Denver outputs, well above the Montana 256.24 million and Utah 253.2 million but below the Wyoming 320.8 million and Idaho 286.8 million.

Strikes on Denver Washingtons come up cleanly defined more often than not, with the salmon's scale rows and Rainier's snowline serving as the natural detail registers. Weak strikes show up first as softness along the fish's dorsal fin and along the mountain ridgeline where the relief sits deepest. Washington's cheek and hair-above-ear remain the obverse weak points for grading, and 2007-D bag handling typically caps many candidates at MS66. PCGS and NGC populations run deep at MS66, narrower at MS67, and meaningfully scarce at MS68 in the population reports kept by the two major third-party grading services (TPGs). No FS-listed varieties anchor to the issue.

The 2007-D Washington is the higher-output of the year's P/D pair and reads as the readily available standard for the salmon-and-Rainier design. Roll searchers continue to pull premium strikes for full-detail gems, and MS67 examples remain available for collectors completing a top-grade run on a working budget. The reverse pairs naturally with Oregon's 2005 Crater Lake and California's 2005 Yosemite issues in a Pacific-states subset. For wider context, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
