About this coinHistory

Wyoming put a silhouette on its quarter and trusted the design to carry. The Bucking Horse and Rider, registered as a state trademark since 1936 and lifted directly from the license plate motif most Americans already recognized, fills the reverse in stark profile, with no landscape, no inscription beyond the state name and motto "The Equality State," and no concessions to compositional balance other than the rider's raised arm. Norman E. Nemeth sculpted the design, and the proof format does something genuinely striking with the negative space. The horse and rider register as frosted cameo silhouettes against polished black fields so deep they create the optical impression of figures suspended in dark glass. Wyoming claims the bucking horse silhouette is based on the 1903 horse Steamboat, ridden by a particular cowboy in a particular rodeo year, though competing origin claims exist. What matters numismatically is that the proof striking turns simplicity into authority.

San Francisco delivered 2,374,778 clad proofs of the Wyoming issue, the standard 2007 figure matched across all five releases in the proof set program. Authentication on a silhouette-heavy design like this one focuses heavily on field quality. Genuine proofs return watery, hall-of-mirrors reflectivity across the open background, generated by polished dies meeting polished planchets under elevated tonnage; prooflike business strikes show radial flow lines streaming outward from the centers under angled light. The rims read squared and crisp from the close-collar proof process, where a business strike shows gently rounded shoulders. Under a 10x loupe, die-polish lines run in tight parallel patterns across the fields, while cleaning hairlines from improper storage or wiping scatter in random directions. Cupronickel-clad construction holds at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with the copper core showing as a thin reddish line on the edge. Cameo and Deep Cameo designations from PCGS or NGC command meaningful premiums, especially where the rider's frost survives intact.
