About this coinHistory

Denver's 2010 Yellowstone production reached 35,400,000 pieces, matching the same Denver tally posted for the Hot Springs opener and running 1.8 million ahead of Philadelphia's 33,600,000. The mintage spread is small enough that neither mint commands a meaningful premium today, though set builders sometimes note that Denver's 2010 ATB output ran consistently higher than Philadelphia's across four of the five designs. Don Everhart's reverse, the Old Faithful and bison composition, was the second of his two 2010 designs and showcases his preference for layered foreground-midground-background arrangement on the small quarter canvas.

Strike quality on the Denver issue often runs marginally crisper than Philadelphia in the bison hair detail and the steam plume of the geyser, though die-state variation across the production run is the bigger factor in any specific example's grade. The composition follows the standard clad formula (75% copper-nickel outer layers, pure copper core, 5.67 grams total), and authentication concerns are essentially nil for circulation-strike modern clad coinage. Counterfeiters do not target this issue: there is no profit margin in faking a coin that sells for face value in circulated condition. The high-grade market runs through PCGS and NGC (the two leading third-party grading services); raw examples in the MS65 to MS66 band remain findable in original bank rolls.

As a collecting target, the 2010-D Yellowstone is a Regular-classification entry where the action happens at MS67 and above. Population reports show meaningful drops between MS67 and MS68, with the higher grade carrying a real premium. Roll hunters in the upper plains and Rocky Mountain states still report occasional MS65 cherry-picks from original bank-wrapped quarters, though yield has thinned considerably since the design's release year. The Denver issue typically prices alongside its Philadelphia counterpart in slabbed grades, with no meaningful date-or-mint preference among set builders. For the broader story of the ATB program, the 2008 authorizing legislation, and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
