About this coinHistory

Yellowstone, established March 1, 1872 as the first national park in the world, drew the second slot in the 2010 ATB launch year. Don Everhart's reverse pairs Old Faithful at full eruption with a bison in the foreground, compressing the park's twin draws (geothermal spectacle and bison herds) into a single horizontal composition. Philadelphia struck 33,600,000 pieces, the lowest 2010 P-mint figure across all five designs and a modest step down from the Hot Springs opener. The release date of June 1, 2010 placed the issue into Federal Reserve channels just as summer travel season started, which gave the design heavier collector visibility than the typical winter-released issue.

Strike characteristics on the issue cluster around two grading points: the geyser plume, which can range from mushy to crisp depending on die state, and the bison's hair detail, which is where Mint State 67 examples separate from MS66. Philadelphia dies during the 2010 ATB cycle showed faster wear than collectors expected, so late-die-state examples are common and represent the bulk of the surviving population in MS65 and MS66. The clad composition is standard: 75% copper-nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 5.67 grams. PCGS (the Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC handle the slabbed market; raw examples in the MS65 to MS66 band still appear in original bank-wrapped rolls, particularly those released into circulation in mountain-west states.

The 2010-P Yellowstone is a common date in collecting terms and a Regular-classification entry, with premiums concentrated in MS67 and above. Population reports thin out sharply at MS68, where the issue functions as a genuine condition rarity rather than a date rarity. Set builders chasing the entire 56-coin run in slabbed MS67 typically pick up the Philadelphia and Denver pair as a unit, since both are widely available and priced as a tier rather than as individuals. For the broader story of the ATB program, the 2008 authorizing legislation, and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
