2010-P Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon entered the ATB sequence as design four of the 2010 launch year, released September 20, 2010 to mark the park's federal protection arc that started with Theodore Roosevelt's 1908 national monument designation and culminated in 1919 park status. Phebe Hemphill's reverse takes an unusual approach: rather than picturing the canyon's vast scale through wide vista, she frames a foreground composition of Ancestral Puebloan granaries perched on a canyon ledge, with the canyon walls receding behind. The choice put cultural history alongside geology and gave the design a quieter, more intimate read than the rim-overlook treatment many collectors expected. Philadelphia struck 34,800,000 pieces, matching the Yosemite P-mint figure to the unit.

Strike quality on the issue concentrates at the granary detail in the foreground, where the small stacked-stone texture either reads crisply or flattens into a blur. This single area essentially separates MS66 from MS67 in grading. Die-state variation runs significant on the design, and late-die-state pieces frequently show softened relief on the granaries even when the canyon-wall detail behind remains acceptable. The clad composition is the standard 75% copper-nickel outer layers over a pure copper core (5.67 grams, 24.26 mm diameter, reeded edge). Authentication is a non-issue for modern clad quarters: PCGS (the Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC handle the slabbed market for graders, while raw examples remain findable through bank-roll searching.

The 2010-P Grand Canyon is a Regular-classification common date, with premiums concentrated in MS67 and a sharper jump at MS68 where the population thins meaningfully. Hemphill's granary composition makes the design a favorite among collectors who appreciate the program's willingness to depict human cultural sites alongside natural features, and registry-set builders pursuing the complete 56-design run typically pick up the issue in MS67 slabs without resistance.
