Denver's 2012 Denali came in at 24,800,000 pieces, the third-highest D-mint mintage of the year behind Hawai'i Volcanoes and Acadia but well below the 33.6 million Philadelphia produced for the same design. Susan Gamble's reverse, with a Dall sheep ram in the foreground and the south face of Denali behind, closed out the 2012 release calendar. The mountain itself carries a 20,310-foot summit and remained officially named Mount McKinley until 2015, three years after the issue was struck; the reverse legend reads "DENALI" because the National Park Service had used the local name internally for decades regardless of the formal federal designation.
D-mint examples from this issue tend to show somewhat fuller strike on the Dall sheep's curled horn than the Philadelphia counterparts, where late-die-state pressings can soften the spiral ridges. The mountain face is the secondary grading anchor: look for layered cliff detail and clean separation between the snowfield areas and the rock striations. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel outer layers over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) matches every quarter struck since 1965, so authentication is functionally a non-issue and the high-grade market runs entirely through PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs. Roll hunters can still pull MS65 examples from original D-mint rolls.
The 2012-D Denali carries a Regular classification and trades through the lower Mint State grades at common-date pricing. Real premiums begin at MS67 where population reports show the D-mint slightly scarcer than the Philadelphia issue at the same grade, and at MS68 the certified population for both mints drops into the low hundreds. Set builders chasing a complete 2012 ATB run typically buy the issue in MS66 or MS67 slabs and reserve real money for the apex grade.
