About this coinHistory

Denver's 2012 El Yunque came in at the same 25,800,000 figure as Philadelphia, an unusual parity for the period and a marker of how tightly Federal Reserve quarter orders had narrowed by 2012. Gary Whitley's reverse, with its coqui frog perched on a rainforest branch and a Puerto Rican parrot in mid-flight behind, became the first circulating U.S. coin to honor a Puerto Rican site and the first ATB design dedicated to a tropical rainforest. The El Yunque National Forest sits in the Sierra de Luquillo and is the only U.S. National Forest classified as tropical rainforest, which gave the program its most ecologically distinctive entry to that point.

Production characteristics at Denver during the 2012 run tend to read slightly differently from Philadelphia. D-mint examples often show fuller strike on the parrot's wing feathering, while the coqui's surface texture can soften where dies were used into later pressings. Authentication concerns are minimal because clad quarters are uneconomic to counterfeit; the high-grade market runs through PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs, and raw coins move at face-plus levels regardless of date. Roll hunters still pull MS65 examples from original D-mint bank rolls, though registry set demand has thinned the top of the curve more aggressively for 2012 than for the higher-mintage 2013 issues that followed.

The 2012-D El Yunque carries a Regular classification but functions as a quiet condition target inside the series. Population reports show the D-mint slightly more available than Philadelphia at MS66 and roughly equivalent at MS67, with both falling off sharply at MS68 where the combined certified population sits in the low hundreds. Collectors building the circulation run typically buy the issue raw or in MS66 slabs and reserve premium spend for MS67 and above. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
