About this coinHistory

The 2014-P Arches honors a Utah park whose namesake formations are among the most photographed natural features in the American Southwest. Joseph Menna's reverse renders Delicate Arch in the middle distance with the La Sal Mountains as a backdrop, a layered composition that pulls Menna's preference for depth into the small quarter canvas. Philadelphia struck 214,200,000 pieces, the largest 2014 Philadelphia output and an unusual flip of the year's broader pattern, since Denver normally led production during the 2014-2015 stretch but came in below at 196,400,000 for the same design. The Arches issue is the only 2014 design where Philadelphia outproduced Denver.

Strike quality on the issue is uneven across the high-volume run, which is typical for a Philadelphia mintage at this scale. Grading services watch the arch's underside curve and the layered La Sal Mountain ridges when separating MS66 from MS67, since worn dies flatten those areas first. Look at the texture in the foreground sandstone for additional die-state cues. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) follows the standard quarter formula in use since 1965, so counterfeit risk is functionally nil and the high-grade market runs through PCGS (the Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs. Roll hunters working original Philadelphia rolls still pull MS65 examples without much trouble.

As a collecting target, this is a Regular-classification issue where the registry market lives at MS67 and above. The very large mintage works against scarcity at the lower grades, where prices barely move above face value for circulated examples, but the uneven strike quality across the production run keeps the supply of true superb-gem examples thinner than the raw figure would suggest. Population reports thin sharply at MS68 and prices step up to match. Menna's compositional choice, with the arch placed off-axis and the mountain backdrop framing the scene, has drawn its own small following among collectors who follow the artist's broader output across U.S. coinage.
