About this coinHistory

The 2014-P Shenandoah is the second design of the fifth ATB year and the first to honor a Virginia site, a stretch of the Blue Ridge Mountains protected since 1935 and best known to hikers for the Skyline Drive that runs the spine of the park. Phebe Hemphill's reverse places a hiker on a rocky outlook gazing across the valley below, a more figurative composition than the landmark-centered designs that dominate the series. Philadelphia struck 112,800,000 pieces, a moderate figure that sits between the year's high-output Arches issue and the lower Great Smoky tally, while Denver's 249,000,000 output for the same design represented one of the largest single-mint Shenandoah totals in the series.

Strike quality on the issue runs solid through the central composition, with the hiker's figure and the rocky outlook holding detail well. Grading services watch the hiker's pack straps and the layered ridgeline behind the figure when separating MS66 from MS67, since those fine elements are the first to soften on worn dies. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) follows the standard quarter formula in use since 1965, so counterfeit risk is functionally nil. The high-grade market runs through PCGS (the Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs; roll hunters working original Philadelphia rolls still pull MS65 examples without much trouble.

As a collecting target, this is a Regular-classification issue with the typical 2014 grade-distribution profile: common through MS66, with prices stepping up at MS67 and climbing hard at MS68 where the certified population drops into the low hundreds. Hemphill's figurative reverse has drawn its own small following among collectors who prize human-element designs over architectural or wildlife motifs, which has helped support modest premiums at the top grades. Series builders chasing a complete circulation run typically buy raw or MS66-slabbed examples and reserve real money for MS68 placement coins. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
