About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 1,168,308 pieces of the 2014-S Arches clad proof for collector distribution inside the year's two proof products. Joseph Menna's reverse renders Delicate Arch, the freestanding sandstone span on the slickrock bowl in southeastern Utah, with the La Sal Mountains visible across the valley behind. The composition relies on three distinct relief planes: the arch itself in highest relief, the sandstone bowl in mid-relief, and the distant La Sal range in low relief against the field. The issue is the third of five 2014 releases and represents one of the program's strongest pieces of compositional engraving.

Proof finish on the issue is the standard San Francisco approach: mirrored fields produced from polished planchets struck against dies frosted in chemical baths before each press run. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) are the contrast designations PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, apply on top of the numeric grade. DCAM is the default outcome on the issue. Grade distribution at the two services clusters heavily at PR69-DCAM and PR70-DCAM, with the top tier pop counts running into the thousands. The texture of the sandstone face on the arch's underside and the snowcap detail on the La Sal peaks are the diagnostic strike areas, since both rely on fine textural relief that flattens under weak press pressure. Counterfeit risk is essentially nil at the price point.

Collector demand for the issue routes through year-set or design-set assembly rather than standalone purchase, but the Arches design draws additional attention because Delicate Arch is the most photographed natural feature in the National Park System and registers immediately with general-audience viewers. A raw certified PR69-DCAM example moves for a small premium over the cost of breaking up a sealed 2014 Proof Set, and PR70-DCAM examples in NGC or PCGS holders sit at a slightly higher tier above that. Topical landscape collectors and Utah-focused collectors alike treat the issue as a baseline acquisition, which has held its modest pricing band stable.
