About this coinHistory

San Francisco closed the 2014 ATB proof slate with Joseph Menna's Everglades design at 1,168,308 pieces, matching the rest of the year's releases unit-for-unit because the Mint shipped the five quarters as a packaged set. The reverse renders an anhinga, the long-necked freshwater bird local collectors and Floridians know as the snakebird, diving from a partially submerged tree stump toward the water surface below. The composition catches the bird mid-motion rather than perched, which adds visual energy uncommon to ATB reverses, and the surrounding sawgrass and water plane fill the remainder of the field. The issue is the fifth and final 2014 release.

Proof finish on the issue is the standard San Francisco style: mirrored fields struck from polished planchets against dies frosted in chemical baths before each press run. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) are the two contrast designations PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, apply on top of the numeric grade. DCAM is the default outcome on the issue rather than a step-up tier. Grade distribution clusters at PR69-DCAM and PR70-DCAM with population counts in the thousands at the top tier. The anhinga's individual wing feathers and the texture of the tree stump are the diagnostic strike areas, since both involve fine-detail relief that flattens under weak press pressure into generic shapes. Counterfeit risk is essentially nil at the issue's price point.

The issue trades at the bottom of the modern proof market and routes through year-set or design-set assembly rather than standalone collector pursuit. A raw certified PR69-DCAM example moves for a few dollars over the cost of breaking up a sealed 2014 Proof Set, and PR70-DCAM examples in NGC or PCGS holders carry a modest premium that has compressed as ATB proof registry-set competition has cooled. The Everglades design is among the few ATB reverses to depict freshwater wildlife in active motion and tends to draw additional interest from wildlife topical collectors, though that interest has not separated pricing from its 2014 sister designs in the broader market.
