The 2015-P Blue Ridge Parkway carries the highest mintage of any single ATB issue at any mint, with Philadelphia striking 505,200,000 pieces for a scenic mountain highway running 469 miles between the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah parks. The half-billion figure was the leading edge of unusual 2015 Federal Reserve quarter demand and a clear outlier even within that already high-mintage year. Frank Morris's reverse depicts a Carolina Northern flying squirrel on a winter branch with leafless trees framing the composition, a quiet wildlife scene chosen over any direct view of the parkway itself.
Strike quality on the issue is uneven across the enormous production run, which is unavoidable at this volume. Grading services watch the squirrel's individual fur strands, the bark texture on the branch, and the trailing tail when separating MS66 from MS67, since worn dies flatten those fine elements first. The pose, with the squirrel facing toward the viewer, also tests the rendering of the small eye and ear detail. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) follows the standard quarter formula in use since 1965, so counterfeit risk is functionally nil. The high-grade market runs through PCGS (the Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs; roll hunters working original Philadelphia rolls pull MS65 examples with minimal effort given the supply.
As a collecting target, this is a Regular-classification issue where the very large mintage drives prices to face value through MS66 and the registry market only engages meaningfully at MS68 and above. The half-billion figure means certified populations in MS67 are also higher than is typical for the series, which has kept the step-up at that grade modest compared to other 2015 dates. The MS68 tier, where population thins to the low hundreds, is where real money concentrates. Frank Morris's flying squirrel subject has drawn collector attention as one of the more unusual wildlife choices in the series, since the design substitutes a small mammal for the more typical bird or large game animal seen across the program. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
