About this coinHistory

The 2015-P Kisatchie is the second 2015 design and the only ATB issue to honor a Louisiana site, the National Forest covering 604,000 acres in the central part of the state. Susan Gamble's reverse renders a wild turkey in flight with longleaf pines anchoring the background, a wildlife-in-action composition that connects to Gamble's earlier 2011 Olympic and 2012 Denali reverses, both of which also placed motion at the center of the design. Philadelphia struck 397,200,000 pieces, the second-highest 2015 mintage at any single mint and the leading indicator of the year's series-record Federal Reserve quarter demand. Only the same year's Blue Ridge Parkway Philadelphia issue would exceed it.

Strike quality on the issue runs uneven across the very high-volume run, which is typical for a Philadelphia mintage at this scale. Grading services watch the turkey's individual wing feathers and the layered pine needle detail when separating MS66 from MS67, since worn dies flatten those fine textures first. The bird's head and beak profile are useful die-state indicators, as is the contour of the trailing leg. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) follows the standard quarter formula in use since 1965, so counterfeit risk is functionally nil. The high-grade market runs through PCGS (the Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs; roll hunters working original Philadelphia rolls still pull MS65 examples with little effort given the production volume.

As a collecting target, this is a Regular-classification issue where the registry market lives at MS67 and above. The very large mintage works against scarcity at the lower grades, where prices remain at or near face value for circulated examples, but the uneven strike quality across the run keeps the supply of true superb-gem examples meaningfully thinner than the headline figure would suggest. Population reports show sharp drops between MS67 and MS68. The Kisatchie issue has also drawn collector interest from buyers focused on wildlife motifs across the series, alongside its position as one of the high-volume 2015 dates.
