About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 174,000,000 Ozark quarters in 2017, the third of the year's five releases and the lowest Philadelphia 2017 ATB output. The reverse honored Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the first federally protected river system in the United States (established 1964) and the only national-park-system unit dedicated solely to free-flowing rivers. Chris Costello's reverse, sculpted by Renata Gordon, shows a boy paddling a johnboat past a Missouri bluff with a cottonmouth snake (the species is native to the Current and Jacks Fork rivers the site protects) coiled at the water's edge. The composition is one of the most narrative-driven in the program.

Strike quality on the issue tracks the broader 2017 Philadelphia run: dies were generally well maintained, but the fine reverse detail on the boy's paddle, the canoe planking, and the bluff's rock texture is where graders separate gem from near-gem. Look at the snake's coil and the figure's outline for strike grading: late-die-state examples show flattening across those raised elements. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) matches every quarter struck since 1965, so counterfeit risk is functionally nil and the high-grade market runs through PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs. Roll hunters working original P-mint bags still recover MS65 examples for this date.

As a collecting target, the 2017-P Ozark is a Regular-classification entry where the lower 2017 mintage (the lowest of any P-mint issue that year) and the narrative composition combine to give the date a modest popularity edge in the year's group. Certified-population data show tighter MS68 distribution than the higher-mintage 2017 designs, which translates to a small but real premium for true MS68 examples. Series builders chasing the full ATB run typically pick the issue up raw or in MS66 slabs and reserve real money for the date at the top of the grading scale. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
