About this coinHistory

The Denver 2018 Apostle Islands strike came in at 126,000,000 pieces, only modestly higher than Philadelphia for the design and one of the closer P-D splits in the 2018 production year. Patricia Lucas-Morris designed the reverse around the Devil's Island sea caves on Lake Superior, with a kayaker paddling through the arch as a scale anchor in the foreground. Denver examples generally carry slightly fuller rock-surface detail than the Philadelphia counterpart, the result of better die polish on the early-cycle D-mint pairings. The D mintmark sits in the standard ATB position on the obverse, just right of the Washington portrait's queue, and is small enough that mintmark-attribution mistakes occasionally pop up in raw coin sales.

Strike points for the issue concentrate at the cave arch, the kayak figure, and the water surface between them. MS66 examples render the arch with full vertical relief and show a clean kayak silhouette, while MS67 coins add readable hull texture and a defined paddle stroke. Die wear on the 2018-D cycle followed the same pattern as Philadelphia: cave-wall striations soften first, followed by the kayak's small relief details. The clad composition runs the standard 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core at 5.67 grams. Authentication concerns do not extend to date attribution because clad quarters cost more to fake than the premium recovers; the relevant authentication question is whether a slabbed coin's grade reflects what the holder claims, which is where PCGS and NGC slabs do their work for registry buyers.

The 2018-D Apostle Islands is a Regular classification entry and a commonly available issue raw and through MS66. Population reports show it slightly more available than the Philadelphia counterpart at MS66 and roughly equivalent at MS67, with both falling off at MS68 where the combined certified population is in the low hundreds. Registry collectors building the 56-coin clad set typically pay the same premium for the P and D issues from 2018 and treat the year as a unit.
