About this coinHistory

Denver's 2018 Cumberland Island mintage came in at 162,000,000 pieces, the higher production figure for the design and a 38 percent step up from the Philadelphia counterpart. The split reflects the late-series pattern of Denver carrying a heavier share of Federal Reserve quarter orders. Donna Weaver's reverse shows a wild horse running along a dune ridge, drawing on the feral horses that have ranged the Georgia barrier island since the colonial era. The dynamic pose, with mane and tail flowing against the dune line, is the strongest engraving detail in the 2018 design lineup and the feature that most rewards a sharp strike. The D mintmark sits just right of Washington's queue on the obverse, in standard ATB position.

Strike points for the issue concentrate at the horse's mane and at the leg positions. Denver examples tend to render the mane slightly fuller than Philadelphia, an artifact of die preparation rather than a systematic difference in pressure. MS66 examples require full mane texture and at least three readable legs in the running pose; MS67 examples add crisp dune-grass texture at the ridge line. Die wear softens the mane first, then the dune grass, then the tail; the wear sequence is consistent enough that raw-coin cherry-pickers can sort rolls by checking the mane alone. The clad composition runs the standard 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core at 5.67 grams. Authentication is not a date-level concern, since clad quarters are uneconomic to counterfeit and PCGS and NGC slabs handle premium-grade authentication.

The 2018-D Cumberland Island is a Regular classification entry, common raw and through MS66 and turning into a condition rarity at MS68. Population reports show the issue slightly more available than Philadelphia at MS67, the same pattern that runs through 2018 and 2019 D-mint output. Registry buyers building the 56-coin clad set treat the P and D 2018 Cumberland Island as priced together, with neither side commanding a meaningful premium.
