About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck the 2018-S Cumberland Island Silver Reverse Proof at 451,510 pieces, the figure matching the U.S. Mint Silver Reverse Proof Set sales total because the five quarters shipped as a packaged five-coin unit. Donna Weaver's reverse honors Cumberland Island National Seashore on the Georgia coast, centering on a wild horse running along a dune ridge with dynamic mane-and-tail engraving that draws on the feral horses that have ranged the barrier island since the colonial era. The composition is the 90% silver, 10% copper alloy on a 6.25-gram planchet carrying .1808 troy ounces of pure silver, 24.26 millimeters across with a reeded edge. 2018 was the last ATB year struck in the 90% alloy before the 2019 transition to .999 fine silver.

The Reverse Proof finish inverts the standard proof treatment: the fields read frosted and matte, while the horse, the dune ridge, and the lettering all carry the high-mirror polish a normal proof reserves for its background plane. The dynamic horse-and-dune composition is one of the most engraving-forward designs in the year's group, and the finish suits the running pose well, because the mane striations, the readable legs, and the dune-grass texture all read as polished elements pulling forward from a soft frosted backdrop. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, label the slab insert Reverse Proof or REV PR explicitly rather than applying the Cameo (CAM) or Deep Cameo (DCAM) tiers used on standard proofs. Surface inspection drives authentication: fields frosted, devices mirrored, contrast running the inverse of every other 2018-S proof in the catalog.

The collector market positions the issue as a one-time release: the Silver Reverse Proof Set was the only ATB-era product the Mint issued in this finish. PR69-RP examples move at a modest premium over the cost of breaking up an intact set; PR70-RP examples in NGC or PCGS holders sit a tier higher, with registry-set buyers driving the spread. The 451,510 print sits below the year's 481,140 standard silver proof figure and at roughly 44 percent of the 1.02-million clad proof figure. Together with the 2017-S Enhanced Uncirculated pair and the 2010 Satin Finish coins, the 2018 Silver Reverse Proofs make up the small special-finish corner of the ATB catalog.
