About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 200,200,000 quarters for the 2021 Tuskegee Airmen release, the 56th and final design of the America the Beautiful Quarters program and the only 2021 ATB issue. The Mint produced just one design that year because the 56-design quota set by the 2008 authorizing legislation had been reached, and the 2022 calendar transitioned to the American Women Quarters Program with a new Washington portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser, replacing the 1932 John Flanagan obverse that had carried the series through its 12-year run. The site honored, Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site at Moton Field in Alabama, commemorates the first African-American military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces, who trained there from 1941 onward and went on to fly distinguished combat records over Europe with the 332nd Fighter Group.

Chris Costello's reverse shows a Tuskegee Airman in full flight gear, goggles raised, standing beside a P-51 Mustang with the unit's signature red tail markings visible behind him, and carries the inscription THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS along the upper field, a reference to the airmen's parallel struggles against fascism abroad and segregation at home. Strike quality on the Philadelphia issue separates at the airman's face detail, the goggles' frame definition, and the fuselage lettering on the Mustang. Mid-grade examples in MS65 show legible facial structure on the airman, while MS67 candidates need crisp definition along the goggle frame and at the aircraft's tail surface. The clad composition runs 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core at 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm diameter, reeded edge. Authentication is functionally nil for circulation-strike modern clad coinage at face value.

The 2021-P Tuskegee Airmen is a Regular-classification issue trading at face-plus levels in circulated grades, with the certified-grade market activating around MS66. The design's status as the series closer has held steady collector attention at the registry level, and population reports at PCGS (the Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC show the typical thinning pattern through MS67 with a sharper falloff at MS68. Roll hunters working original Philadelphia rolls during the 2021 release window pulled MS65 examples consistently. The Costello reverse is widely regarded among the program's strongest human-figure compositions, and the THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS inscription marks one of only a few overtly editorial ATB inscriptions across the entire series. For the broader story of the ATB program's 56-design arc, the 2008 authorizing legislation, and the 2022 transition to the American Women Quarters Program, see the Washington ATB series history.
