Denver's 2021 Tuskegee Airmen production reached 223,000,000 pieces, running 22.8 million ahead of Philadelphia's 200,200,000 for the same design and giving Denver the larger half of the only 2021 ATB pairing. The output also closes the Denver column for the entire America the Beautiful Quarters program: this is the 56th and final design, the last circulation-strike ATB ever struck at any mint, and the last U.S. quarter to carry John Flanagan's 1932 Washington portrait before the 2022 transition to the new Laura Gardin Fraser obverse and the American Women Quarters Program. The Mint issued only one design in 2021 because the 56-design quota set by the 2008 authorizing legislation had been reached.
Chris Costello's reverse shows a Tuskegee Airman in flight gear standing beside a P-51 Mustang with the unit's distinctive red tail visible behind him, and carries the inscription THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS along the upper field, a phrase recognizing the parallel struggle against fascism abroad and segregation at home that defined the unit's history. Strike quality on the Denver issue often matches Philadelphia closely, with the grading conversation turning on the airman's face detail, the goggles' frame, and the fuselage lettering. Mid-grade certified pieces in MS65 show legible facial definition on the airman, while MS67 candidates need sharp detail along the goggle frame and the aircraft tail. The clad composition follows the standard formula at 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm diameter, reeded edge. Counterfeit risk is functionally nil for the issue.
The 2021-D Tuskegee Airmen is a Regular-classification issue where the design's status as the program's closer has held steady collector attention, particularly at the MS67-plus registry tier. Population reports thin meaningfully at MS68, where set-builder demand from collectors completing the 56-coin run absorbs the limited high-grade output and prices hold their premium. The Costello reverse is widely considered among the strongest human-figure compositions the program produced, and the THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS inscription marks the editorial close of a series that more often deferred to landscape and landmark imagery. Roll hunters working original Denver bank rolls during the 2021 release window pulled MS65 examples without much trouble. For the broader story of the ATB program's 56-design arc, the 2008 authorizing legislation, and the 2022 transition to the American Women Quarters Program, see the Washington ATB series history.
