About this coinHistory

Maya Angelou's literary career, from "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" in 1969 through her 1993 Clinton Inaugural recitation of "On the Pulse of Morning," gave her a public profile that few American writers ever reach, and the US Mint chose her as the first honoree of the American Women Quarters Program. Denver's contribution to the Angelou release ran to 258,000,000 pieces, edging out Philadelphia's 237,600,000 and making D-mint Angelou quarters the most common variant of the entire 2022 launch. Denver historically supplies the western states, and most pocket-change examples pulled west of the Mississippi during early 2022 carry the D mintmark. The branch's role in this program continues a Washington quarter production pattern that began in 1934, two years after the series first appeared.

Emily Damstra's reverse composition, sculpted by Craig A. Campbell, places Angelou at center with arms raised, a bird flying near her shoulder, and a sun rising behind her, an image drawn from her autobiographical work and her best-known poetry. The obverse adopts Laura Gardin Fraser's Washington portrait, the same 1932 sculpt that Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon had rejected in favor of John Flanagan's design when the original Washington quarter went into production. The American Women program rehabilitated Fraser's portrait for circulation use. The coin is 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel over a pure copper core, weighs 5.67 grams, measures 24.3 millimeters across, and has a reeded edge. Authentication on a Denver Angelou turns on the small D below the bust, the strike sharpness across Angelou's outstretched fingers, and bird detail in the upper field. Heavy die use during the run produced a small population of late-die-state examples with softer detail.

D-mint Angelou quarters trade as common in circulated grades but draw premiums in high mint state. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) reports show strong populations through MS66 and a meaningful drop at MS68. For program-level coverage, see the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
