About this coinHistory

Maya Angelou earned the National Medal of Arts in 2000 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010, the second civilian honor following decades of work that included her 1969 memoir "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" and her 1993 Inaugural poem for President Clinton. The 2022-S clad proof reproduces the Angelou design in San Francisco's signature finish, with mirror fields and frosted devices, in a mintage of 863,886 pieces. These coins were sold to collectors inside the 2022 Proof Set and the 2022 Quarters Proof Set rather than entering circulation, and the figure was set by collector demand for those packaged products rather than by Federal Reserve coin orders.

San Francisco's proof process begins with specially polished blanks struck multiple times at low speed by hand-polished dies, which is what produces the deep mirror behind Angelou's figure and the frost across her arms, the bird, and Fraser's Washington portrait on the obverse. The reverse follows Emily Damstra's design as sculpted by Craig A. Campbell. Composition matches the circulating clad: 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel clad to a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.3 millimeters in diameter, reeded edge. The S mintmark sits above the date on the obverse. Authentication for proofs depends on the contrast between mirror fields and frosted relief, sharp wire-rim definition, and the absence of any planchet flaw, since the polished blanks rarely show the streaks common on business strikes. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) issue Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) designations for the strongest field-to-device contrast.

PR69 Deep Cameo examples are common, while PR70 DCAM coins command meaningful premiums tied to grader population. Early-issue and First Strike holders add their own collector market on top of the base proof. For full program context, see the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
