Sally Ride's June 1983 Challenger flight broke the American gender barrier in space, and her later work at Sally Ride Science aimed at the next generation of women scientists. The image is identical to the P, D, and proof reverses, since the difference between NIFC and circulation strikes lies in finish and distribution rather than design. Laura Gardin Fraser's Washington portrait appears on the obverse, with the S mintmark above the date.
