About this coinHistory

Sally Ride's June 1983 Challenger flight broke the American gender barrier in space, and her later work at Sally Ride Science aimed at the next generation of women scientists. Her 2022 American Women quarter appears here in the San Francisco "Not Intended For Circulation" (NIFC) format, an uncirculated finish clad strike sold directly to collectors in US Mint bags and rolls. Mintage is reported at 863,886 pieces, the same allotment as the clad proof, since both came from a shared collector production run. The NIFC was never released through the Federal Reserve and never entered general circulation, which is why genuine examples in original Mint packaging command meaningful premiums over loose pieces.

Elana Hagler's reverse design, sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, shows Ride in profile aboard Challenger, looking through the flight deck window at Earth below. The image is identical to the P, D, and proof reverses, since the difference between NIFC and circulation strikes lies in finish and distribution rather than design. Laura Gardin Fraser's Washington portrait appears on the obverse, with the S mintmark above the date. The coin is 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel over a pure copper core, weighs 5.67 grams, measures 24.3 millimeters across, and carries a reeded edge. Authentication centers on three points: the S mintmark, the satin business strike finish (NOT proof mirror), and original Mint packaging where present. A common error is confusing the S NIFC with the S clad proof of the same year, but the NIFC has matte business strike fields rather than mirror finish.

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) certify these as MS examples with S mintmark attribution. Original-bag and original-roll examples remain the strongest premium driver. Original sealed Mint bags and rolls remain the most reliable source for certified gem examples, with sealing tags providing dealer-verified provenance for high-grade submissions.
