Celia Cruz arrived in the United States in 1961 after departing Cuba on a 1960 tour she would never reverse, settling in New Jersey and building a recording career that spanned the golden era of salsa music and beyond. Her collaborations with Tito Puente, the Fania All Stars, and Willie Colon defined Latin music for generations of listeners, and her television appearances brought Spanish language performance into mainstream American homes. Denver struck 156,200,000 quarters for her 2024 commemoration, exceeding the Philadelphia output and supplying western Federal Reserve districts with a robust circulation allocation. The Cruz quarter places her in a small group of US coins to carry Spanish-language legends, following the 2022 Nina Otero-Warren issue with VOTO PARA LA MUJER, and Cruz herself is the first Afro-Latina honored on US currency.
The reverse design from Phebe Hemphill captures Cruz in performance with arms outstretched, a pose drawn from her stage choreography and amplified by the bold inscription that became her trademark. The D mintmark sits below IN GOD WE TRUST on the obverse retaining Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 Washington portrait. Clad specifications follow program standard at 5.67 grams over a copper core with 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel cladding, struck on a 24.3 millimeter planchet with a reeded edge. Authentication should verify the D mintmark presents the proper serif structure and depth characteristic of current Denver die work, examine the inverted exclamation point for full strike definition, and check the lettering around the dress folds where weakly struck examples sometimes show incomplete detail. Modern alteration risk on circulation quarters remains negligible.
Registry interest favors MS68 and finer grades from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), with the historic Spanish inscription supporting stronger demand than comparable program issues. Original mint sewn bags continue to surface in dealer inventory. Series provenance and program context are detailed in the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
