About this coinHistory

Denver's contribution to the Zitkala-Sa quarter totals 170,200,000 pieces, the higher of the two business strike mintages and a workhorse issue for the 2024 American Women releases. Zitkala-Sa, the Yankton Dakota Sioux activist whose given name was Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, devoted her career to writing, music, and political advocacy on behalf of Native communities. Her 1913 collaboration with William F. Hanson produced "The Sun Dance Opera," the first opera composed and performed by a Native American, and her co-founding of the National Council of American Indians in 1926 established a national platform for Indigenous civil rights. The coin's release coincided with growing public recognition of her contributions, decades after her death in 1938, and brought her likeness into general circulation for the first time.

Benjamin Sowards designed the reverse for the Artistic Infusion Program, depicting Zitkala-Sa in traditional Dakota regalia with cultural symbols supporting the composition. The obverse carries Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 Washington portrait, a design originally selected by the Treasury Secretary's commission but bypassed at the time in favor of John Flanagan's work. Composition follows standard modern clad practice at 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel over a copper core, yielding a finished weight of 5.67 grams across a 24.3 millimeter planchet with a reeded edge. Three diagnostics support authentication. Confirm the D mintmark placement just right of Washington's queue on the obverse. Examine the regalia detail for the deeper strike typical of Denver production. Look for the granular surface texture left by Denver's working dies, which differs subtly from Philadelphia's finer fields.

Although mintage levels keep circulated examples worth face value, the series has built a topical collector base that pursues fully struck MS67 and MS68 examples through Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). Early registry sets focused on the American Women series have driven competitive bidding for finest-known pieces. For full context on the program's authorizing legislation and design selection process, see the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
