About this coinHistory

Anna Pauline Murray refused every box the twentieth century built for her. Born in Baltimore in 1910 and raised in Durham, North Carolina by an aunt after her mother's death, Murray was arrested in 1940 for refusing to move to the back of a Virginia bus, fifteen years before Rosa Parks. She graduated first in her Howard Law class in 1944, was denied admission to Harvard Law because she was a woman, and went on to coin the legal theory of "Jane Crow" describing the compounded burdens of race and sex discrimination. That framework shaped Thurgood Marshall's brief in Brown v. Board of Education and was cited by Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Reed v. Reed in 1971. Murray was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1977, among the first women in that tradition. The Philadelphia Mint struck 168,400,000 clad quarters bearing her likeness in 2024, the highest output of either 2024 American Women design from any single facility.

The reverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Robert Hoge and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, presents a thoughtful three-quarter portrait paired with a phrase drawn from Murray's own writing. The Philadelphia strike carries no mintmark on the obverse below Washington's queue, following the convention used for circulating production at that facility. Specifications match the rest of the program: 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel clad over a pure copper core, weight 5.67 grams, diameter 24.3 millimeters, reeded edge. Authentication on business strikes from Philadelphia centers on edge integrity, full reeding without filing, and weight tolerance around 5.67 grams. Counterfeiting is essentially absent at face value, so attribution work focuses instead on die varieties and full-strike detail in Murray's hair and clerical collar.

Collectors building 2024 sets will find this issue inexpensive in circulated grades and modestly priced in MS66 and MS67 through Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). For series background see the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
