About this coinHistory

Zitkala-Sa, born Gertrude Simmons Bonnin in 1876 on the Yankton Sioux Reservation, channeled her experiences as a writer, musician, and Native American rights activist into work that reshaped public understanding of Indigenous life in the United States. She co-composed "The Sun Dance Opera" in 1913, widely recognized as the first Native American opera, and her essays in The Atlantic Monthly brought boarding school abuses into mainstream conversation. In 1926 she co-founded the National Council of American Indians, advocating for citizenship rights, suffrage, and the preservation of cultural identity. Philadelphia struck 152,600,000 of these 2024 quarters honoring her legacy, making it one of the more abundant issues of the year and a common find in modern change and bank rolls.

Designed by Artistic Infusion Program artist Benjamin Sowards, the reverse presents a thoughtful portrait of Zitkala-Sa in traditional Dakota regalia, with cultural symbols framing her likeness. The obverse retains Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 Washington portrait, originally designed for the bicentennial and finally placed on circulating coinage through this series. Specifications follow the standard clad format: 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel bonded over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams in weight, 24.3 millimeters in diameter, with a reeded edge. Authentication of a Philadelphia strike rests on three checkpoints. Verify the P mintmark on the obverse just right of Washington's queue. Confirm full strike on the regalia details, since weakly struck examples sacrifice value at higher grades. Inspect the rims for the sharp shoulders typical of business strikes rather than the squared edges seen on proof pieces.

Collector interest in the American Women series has supported strong demand for high-grade examples certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). Common-date business strikes trade for face value in circulated grades, with premium values reserved for MS67 and finer examples showing full luster and minimal contact marks. Roll and bag hoarding by topical collectors has created a thriving aftermarket. Background on production, design history, and minting context is available on the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
