San Francisco produced 800,000 clad proof quarters honoring Zitkala-Sa as part of the 2024 American Women Quarters Program offerings. The pieces were sold through annual proof sets and individual five-coin quarter sets at premium pricing direct from the United States Mint. Zitkala-Sa, born Gertrude Simmons Bonnin in 1876, built a career as a writer, musician, and Native American rights advocate. Her published essays exposed the conditions endured by Indigenous children in federal boarding schools, while her co-composition of "The Sun Dance Opera" in 1913 broke new ground in American musical theater. Her co-founding of the National Council of American Indians in 1926 created a sustained voice for Indigenous citizenship and suffrage. The proof issue places her portrait on a finely finished coin produced for the collector market rather than for daily commerce.
Benjamin Sowards of the Artistic Infusion Program executed the reverse design, showing Zitkala-Sa in traditional Dakota regalia framed by cultural symbols. The obverse carries Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 Washington portrait. Proof composition matches the circulating clad strike at 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel bonded over a copper core, 5.67 grams in weight, 24.3 millimeters in diameter, with a reeded edge. Authentication of a San Francisco proof rests on several distinct markers. Verify the S mintmark on the obverse. Confirm deeply mirrored fields surrounding frosted devices, the cameo or deep cameo contrast that San Francisco achieves through laser-frosted dies. Check the rims for the squared profile produced by the multiple strikes from polished dies.
Modern proofs in PR69 Deep Cameo and PR70 Deep Cameo grades from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) trade at modest premiums, with PR70 examples drawing the highest bids in registry competition. Original Mint packaging remains a value factor for raw examples and for collectors assembling complete annual proof sets. Production details, legislative background, and design selection notes appear on the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
