About this coinHistory

The silver proof Zitkala-Sa quarter, struck at San Francisco to a reported mintage of 380,000 pieces, represents the premium collector format for the 2024 issue. Released within the annual silver proof set and the dedicated silver quarter set, the coin pairs precious metal content with the Mint's finest surface preparation. Zitkala-Sa, the Yankton Dakota Sioux writer also known as Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, built her reputation through essays in The Atlantic Monthly and Harper's, the 1913 co-composition of "The Sun Dance Opera," and the 1926 founding of the National Council of American Indians. Her advocacy for citizenship, voting rights, and cultural preservation made her one of the most consequential Native American activists of the early twentieth century, and the silver format honors that legacy with appropriate craftsmanship.

Benjamin Sowards designed the reverse for the Artistic Infusion Program, presenting Zitkala-Sa in traditional Dakota regalia accompanied by cultural symbols. Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 Washington portrait occupies the obverse. The silver proof differs from the clad proof in composition and weight. Specifications call for .999 fine silver, 6.343 grams of total weight, 24.3 millimeters in diameter, and a reeded edge. Authentication relies on several checkpoints. Confirm the S mintmark on the obverse. Test the weight against the 6.343 gram standard, since clad pieces weigh 5.67 grams and any substantial deviation indicates either a counterfeit or a planchet error. Inspect the edge color, which on genuine .999 silver shows uniform white tone rather than the copper layer visible on a clad coin. Verify mirrored fields and frosted devices consistent with cameo contrast.

Silver proofs grading PR70 Deep Cameo at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) command meaningful premiums over PR69 examples and the clad proof equivalent. The lower mintage relative to clad proofs, paired with bullion value, supports a firmer floor on resale. For context on the program's silver offerings and the legislative history of the series, see the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
