2025-D Vera Rubin

Vera Rubin spent her career resolving questions about the structure of galaxies that earlier astronomers had been unable to answer with confidence. Her measurements of the rotation of the Andromeda galaxy and dozens of other spirals demonstrated that the orbital velocities of outer stars do not fall off as Newtonian gravity predicts based on visible mass, forcing the scientific community to accept that roughly 85 percent of the matter in the universe is invisible to telescopes. Born in 1928 and educated at Vassar, Cornell, and Georgetown, she conducted much of her landmark work at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and was the first woman officially permitted to observe at the Palomar Observatory. The 2025 Denver mintage of 63,000,000 stands among the lowest Denver outputs of the American Women Quarters Program final year.

The reverse honors Rubin with a portrait paired with astronomical imagery, designed through the Mint's Artistic Infusion Program. The obverse retains Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 right-facing Washington portrait, originally created for the 1932 quarter competition and finally adopted seven decades later. A genuine Denver strike carries a D mintmark on the obverse below Washington's queue, weighs 5.67 grams, measures 24.3 millimeters in diameter, and shows the standard copper-nickel cladding visible as a thin orange-red line at the edge under magnification. Authentication should rule out clad layer separation, an occasional production defect on modern quarters, by inspecting the edge for any blistering, gaps, or missing clad surfaces.

The combination of the program's final year, an astronomer of major scientific consequence, and a comparatively modest Denver mintage gives this issue meaningful collector interest. MS67 and MS68 examples certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) currently dominate registry attention. Denver bank-roll examples occasionally surface in original-mint condition from regional dealers, which provides a reliable acquisition path for set builders pursuing certified gem grades.
