2025-P Althea Gibson

Althea Gibson (1927-2003) broke racial barriers across two professional sports during an era when neither welcomed her presence. Born in South Carolina and raised in Harlem, she became the first African American to win a Grand Slam tennis title at the French Championships in 1956, then claimed Wimbledon and the United States Championships in both 1957 and 1958. Her transition to professional golf in 1964 made her the first Black woman to compete on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour, extending a trail-blazing career that opened doors decades before integration was a settled question in American athletics.
