About this coinHistory

The 1932-D is the lowest-mintage Washington quarter from any non-San Francisco mint across the entire 1932 to 1998 run, with 436,800 pieces struck at the Denver facility in the depths of the Great Depression. Reduced commercial coinage demand kept all three 1932 mintages small, but Denver's figure landed barely above its San Francisco counterpart and far below the 5.4 million Philadelphia output. The coin entered a series no one expected to continue, and the small Denver run was effectively the entire Western supply for what looked at the time like a one-year commemorative. When Congress made the design permanent in 1934, the 1932-D was already in circulation, and the modest survival rate in higher grades has fixed the issue as the structural Key Date of the series alongside the 1932-S.

Authentication is the dominant collector concern. The 1932-D is heavily counterfeited, almost always by adding a D mintmark to a common 1932 Philadelphia coin, and a smaller number of fakes have been produced by removing the D mintmark from a 1934-D or other Denver issue and re-attaching it on a different host. Examine the mintmark for evidence of tooling around its base, mismatched die-pressure characteristics, or a slightly raised collar where the punch was reattached; certified examples in PCGS or NGC holders eliminate the alteration risk almost entirely. Strike quality is typical for first-year Denver coinage, with some weakness on the eagle's breast feathers and Washington's hair detail above the ear; full-detail examples exist but command premiums in any grade.

The Key Date status manifests most aggressively in grades above Extremely Fine, where survival drops sharply. Circulated examples in Good through Fine grades trade for moderate three-figure premiums; About Uncirculated and lower Mint State pieces carry strong four-figure prices, and Gem MS65 and above examples reach into the low five figures at auction. Acquire the coin certified, with an eye on original surfaces, since cleaned or retoned examples discount heavily even within the same numeric grade.
