1935-D

The 1935-D came out of the Denver Mint at 5,780,000 pieces, low enough to anchor the issue as one of the recognized Semi-Key dates of the Washington series. Denver's output ran roughly one-sixth of Philadelphia's 32.4 million for the same year and slightly below the 1935-S figure, but the heavier Denver-region commercial circulation absorbed most of the production and condition-rare survivors above About Uncirculated have shaped the collecting market. The issue sits in a tight cluster of 1930s Denver Semi-Keys with the 1934-D and 1936-D, and all three trade in roughly comparable bands, with grade and surface originality driving the price spread more than mintage gap.

Strike quality on the issue varies. Most circulation examples show acceptable detail, but a meaningful population shows weakness on Washington's hair above the ear and on the eagle's breast feathers, both common weak-strike zones on mid-1930s Denver Washington quarters. Authentication concerns center on the D mintmark below the wreath on the reverse: the position is a frequent target for added-mintmark alterations meant to convert common 1935 Philadelphia coins into the Semi-Key. Examine the mintmark under 5x magnification for tooling marks around its base, mismatched die-pressure characteristics, or a slightly raised border where a punch was reattached. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, both grade and authenticate the issue, and certified holders eliminate the alteration risk for serious purchases.

Semi-Key status applies most aggressively above MS64, where the population drops and Gem examples with original surfaces become genuinely scarce. Circulated examples in Fine through Extremely Fine trade for modest premiums over the 1935-P, About Uncirculated and lower Mint State coins push solid three- and low four-figure prices, and MS65 and finer examples reach into the mid four figures at auction when luster and surface preservation are strong. Certified holders are recommended at MS64 and above. The buyer base spans date-set builders, Washington quarter specialists, and registry participants.
