1979-S Type 1 Proof

The 1979-S Type 1 proof quarter is the early-year half of one of the more recognizable mintmark-punch transitions in modern San Francisco proof production. The S punch the Mint had used since 1968 had degraded by the start of the 1979 proof run, with the loops of the letter filling in to produce a blob-shaped, nearly closed S on early die strikes. Type 1 represents that worn-punch product. Midway through the 1979 production year the Mint introduced a fresh, sharp S punch with clean open loops, and the later strikes from the new punch carry the Type 2 Clear S attribution. The reverse continues the restored John Flanagan heraldic eagle, paired with Washington's portrait by Flanagan on the obverse and the JF initials at the truncation of the neck. Composition is the standard cupronickel clad sandwich at 5.67 grams.

The combined 1979-S proof mintage stands at 3,677,175 sets, split between Type 1 and Type 2 with the Type 1 occupying the substantial majority of production because the punch change happened relatively late in the year. Authentication runs through the mintmark first and under 5x to 10x magnification: a filled or blob-shaped S with the upper and lower loops closed or nearly closed reads as Type 1. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, both attribute the Type 1 and Type 2 varieties on the holder, and unattributed raw material can sometimes be cherrypicked from intact 1979 proof sets where the seller has not separated the two. Strike quality is the strong proof standard expected of late-1970s San Francisco, with Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, common on early die strikes and Deep Cameo specimens at Proof 69 available at modest price.
