The Mint launched the Silver Proof Set in 1992 as a premium-priced companion to the standard Clad Proof Set, packaging the dime, quarter, and half dollar in 90 percent silver while leaving the cent and nickel unchanged. The S mintmark sits to the right of Washington's hair queue on the obverse. Composition reverts to the pre-1965 standard of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, weighing 6.25 grams with .1808 troy ounces of actual silver weight in each piece. The narrower buyer audience at the higher set price held mintages well below the 2,858,981 of the companion Clad Proof issued the same year.
