The 1994-S proof Washington quarter was struck at San Francisco to a recorded mintage of 2,484,594 pieces, continuing the gradual decline in standard proof set sales that marked the run from 1992 onward as collector dollars moved toward the parallel Silver Proof program. The S mintmark sits to the right of Washington's hair queue on the obverse, the position adopted when mintmarks returned to that side of the design in 1968. This issue is the standard Clad Proof, struck on cupronickel: 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel bonded to a pure-copper core at 5.67 grams. The companion 1994-S Silver Proof carries the same date and mintmark but reverts to 90 percent silver at 6.25 grams in a separately sold premium set, and the two should always be distinguished at purchase.

Authentication works through the brilliant proof finish: deeply mirrored fields, crisp square-edged devices, and the squared rim that separates a proof from a circulation strike. A simple weight test is the cleanest separator from the Silver Proof, since the clad piece registers 5.67 grams against the silver piece's 6.25, and edge inspection confirms the result because the clad coin shows the reddish copper-core line along the rim while the silver coin shows uniform color through the edge profile. By 1994 the Mint's frosted-die preparation produced Deep Cameo, the heaviest contrast designation between mirrored fields and frosted devices, on the great majority of the run, so the PR69 and PR70 Deep Cameo population is large. Certification through PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, sets the working standard for any premium-grade buy.

In the modern collecting landscape, the 1994-S Clad Proof is a routine entry in the late Flanagan-eagle proof run, with most surviving examples grading PR68 through PR70 in Deep Cameo. The collecting audience splits between year-set builders, registry collectors chasing PR70 Deep Cameo top-pops, and clad-proof specialists working the final pre-State-Quarter years. Acquisition is straightforward through any major auction house or modern proof-set dealer, and original 1994 proof sets often yield grade-worthy examples without grading premiums in the asking price. The pricing arc is flat until PR70 Deep Cameo separates from PR69 on registry-set demand.
