The 1997-S Silver Proof Washington quarter was struck at San Francisco to a recorded mintage of 741,678 pieces, slightly below the 775,021 of 1996 and continuing the mid-run stability of the 1992 to 1998 Silver Proof program. By 1997 the premium Silver Proof Set had settled into a steady-state audience in the high six hundreds to low eight hundreds of thousands, a small fraction of the broader U.S. coin-collecting market but a reliable customer base for the Mint. The S mintmark sits to the right of Washington's hair queue on the obverse. Composition follows the pre-1965 standard of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper at 6.25 grams, with .1808 troy ounces of actual silver weight in each piece. The companion 1997-S Clad Proof shares the date and mintmark at the standard 5.67-gram cupronickel weight in the standard set.

Authentication on this issue runs through two simultaneous checks: the brilliant proof finish and the silver composition. In the modern collecting landscape, the 1997-S Silver Proof sits in the lower-middle band of the 1992 to 1998 Silver Proof short set and carries a small premium over the highest-mintage members at PR70 Deep Cameo but tracks them at lower grade tiers. Most surviving examples grade PR68 through PR70 in Deep Cameo.
